GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA
This design-build project consists of a 12,661 square foot building addition to the existing 133,661 square foot facility we previously designed-built to allow for the manufacturing of longer wind tower blades. The addition is a structural steel framed building with precast concrete double tee walls, bar joists, metal deck and ballasted EPDM roof. The addition is divided into three work bays varying between 50′ and 90′ clear span. Each of the three bays has a 10-15 ton overhead bridge crane that travels the full length of each bay. The project is complete with a wet fire sprinkler system, mechanical systems to include the addition of a high efficiency boiler, heat exchanger, air cooled condensing unit, new power, lighting and controls.
Additional 6″ and 8″ reinforced concrete pavement was installed on site. A 24″ thick 50,000 square foot recycled concrete street approach was constructed to allow staging and inspection of the wind tower blades prior to transport. The existing fuel depot and acetone storage building were relocated to allow for the economical movement of the longer blades.
Value engineered cost savings include re-purposing the existing 12″ reinforced exterior paving as the interior slab base. The existing paving was milled and a metal fiber reinforced topping was installed over the paving. 20′ x 18′ high speed roll up doors were installed in each bay for fast and efficient movement of manufacturing equipment and materials.
